Working at Asessippi for a winter season provides for a true Canadian snow experience!
The valley is full of wildlife and even in winter it is not unusual to see numerous deer across the river. The resort is part of a larger provincial park that includes Lake of the Prairies. Within a 30-minute radius, there are a number of different rural towns all with unique things to offer. Inglis is the closest village with a population around 200. Russell and Roblin are just 20 minutes away. The area is also known for excellent sport hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, historic sites, accommodations and dining. Inglis is also home to the five prairie giants – grain elevators – a national historic site.
The Resort
Asessippi Ski Area & Resort is a fairly young resort, just 15 years old, but has already exceeded all expectations, with an average of 80,000 guests annually. Powder Keg Pub is located in our panoramic featured space overlooking Squirrel Chair. Asessippi offers a full snow school for both skiing and snowboarding, a rental and tech shop, a boutique style gift shop, group services and, naturally, a front line ticket counter all operated by friendly knowledgeable staff.
Season Dates
The opening date for the resort is around mid-December and closing date is around first weekend of April.
Who Asessippi is Looking For and How to Get a Job.
Asessippi has a variety of both inside and outside employment; check out the website www.asessippi.com for the list. Asessippi is looking for mature, responsible, friendly people that are fun loving, honest and adventuresome with a genuine concern for others. All applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada with a valid work permit. The Canada Page has information on getting a visa to work in Canada. Asessippi is a smaller resort than some you will find in BC or Alberta, but that is exactly what makes Asessippi even more attractive. The focus when working a season is really on customer service. Staff are often seen going out of their way to help out and this is not exclusive to guests. Many of the staff here also farm or live in the area, so it is not unusual for overseas staff to be invited on sleigh rides or for a great day of ice fishing or whatever. Asessippi is a real Canadian experience!
Employee Perks
Staff receive a free ski pass and they are also welcome in the downhill tubing park. Staff also receive free ski or snowboard rentals (when available) and limited lessons can be arranged directly with the snow school. There are discounts for staff in the Trails End Gift Shop and in the some areas of the food court. The staff lunchroom is equipped with free hot and cold beverages and hot fresh soup made daily. Special events and trips for staff are also held throughout the year.
Accommodation at Asessippi for Staff
A few different options are available. Staff housing is deducted from employees’ pay cheques every two weeks. Other rental payments would be arranged with the private owners which is limited. The Bunkhouse is located approximately 10 minutes from the resort. This is the most affordable housing with 10 double occupancy rooms. There is a common living area, kitchen and laundry facility. Showers and washrooms are also shared. There is a shared TV with Satellite and Internet access is available.
The cost of staff accommodation is $14.00 per day. Transportation is provided to and from the resort for work and for staff events. Asessippi also has some limited rental accommodations in Inglis and through some private homeowners, but employees who take this option would require their own transportation. Free wireless Internet access is available at the resort for those wishing to bring a laptop. There is a computer at the resort that can be signed out for use to send and receive emails, Skype, or just check out the web.
Pay
Wage rates are based on job type, qualifications and experience. Minimum wage in Manitoba is $10.70 per hour.
On average the workweek will consist of 25 – 35 hours. This is dependent on the department and weather. Aerial lifts do not run at –40C!
Uniforms
Staff T-shirts are supplied for all staff, and you will need a neat pair of jeans or slacks plus clean shoes in good shape. Outdoor staff will have the use of a resort jacket but you must supply your own warm snow pants, boots, mitts, toques etc. Dress in warm layers and be prepared for some Canadian winter days.
The Asessippi Community
Even though there are employees coming from several communities in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan, most people know each other. The area is very friendly. In the past, seasonal staff have even stayed on in the area because they liked both the people they met and the area so much. This is a fun place to work!
